How Neurotherapy Works

Neurotherapy is a form of biofeedback which trains brain waves back to normal levels.  It works through operant conditioning, i.e. when you do a certain desired behavior, you get rewarded.  When a problem brain wave decreases, you get rewarded.  And you start to bring it down more, without even really trying!

Hence, over several sessions, a brain wave which is too high can be trained or shaped down.  This usually results in either a loss of symptoms and/or an increase in function.  Depending on the number and amplitude of imbalances found during the assessment, treatment may take anywhere from 20 sessions to 50 or more sessions.  Sounds like a lot but keep in mind two principles: (1) this innovative treatment does not rely on medication, and (2) in most cases once the brain waves are brought back to normal range, they remain stable.

You are probably wondering what this treatment looks like or how we do it!  Well, the client is sitting in front of a monitor watching a pleasant scene, such as a plane flying or a dolphin swimming.  They are also listening to a CD.  They are told to watch and keep the scene moving. When the desired brainwave level is reached, the scene moves and a pleasant beep lets them know they have hit their target., and to listen and keep the music playing.  The scene moving and the tone are their motivators and their brain will start "making it happen". You don't really have to understand it all for it to work.  Just show up, relax, and want the scene to move and the tone to beep.
